This lesson is the first part of ‘The market’ and learners are introduces to what a market actually is, market leaders such as Walkers and Nescafe are discussed. We start by looking at market size and growth before reading a concise case study on which market a mobile phone app should be created for. An activity where students consider the importance of market size over market growth. We then go onto looking at how markets have become dynamic along with online retailing. As it is the first lesson of theme 1, students are gently introduced to the assessment objectives with a basic question requiring all 4 assessment objectives - a model answer is provided to help students understand the AOs. This lesson introduces learners to the factors which make a firm globally competitive. We start by looking at the impact of changes in exchange rates and how this can affect the competitiveness of firms even though it is out of their control. We then move onto factors that are more in their contrl such as differentiation and trying to gain low cost competitiveness through economies of scale. A concise case study on China’s toy factories as they manufacture most of the toys in the world, students answer a question on how their competitiveness might affect UK firms in the same industry, and to what extent. This lesson introduces learners to the important concept of opportunity cost, we start by looking at what opportunity cost actually means with some examples, we then have a number of scenarios where students might find themselves in, in the near future. Students are presented with two options, they have to make a choice, we discuss the reasons for their choice and any depends factors (all AOs developed). In the last scenario, we look at whether a student should go it alone or open up a business with a friend - students consider the opportunity cost and answer the 10 mark question, structure guidance and a concise model answer provided. Three lessons here to introduces learner to the impact of multinational companies, we start by looking at Nike as a MNC, then go on to look at Foxconn (usually a company students haven’t heard of until they realise all their electronics are made there). We look at the pros and cons of MNCs, then go on to read a concise case study on a proposed Dam project by two MNCs in Chile which is met with protests. Structure guidance is given and a model answer to help students with peer assessment and exam technique development. In the third lesson, we look at GlaxoSmithKline and their role in developing the economies of Africa, a case study showing how they have invested and what their committments are is looked at and disucssed, students have a debate task for and against the effects of GSK on Africa, this is in a 12 mark question form too with a concise model answer to compare debate points with. We go on to look at one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century - Bill Gates, who started off as young, creative businessman but has evolved into a leader over time. This lesson introduces learners to the various external influences that can impact businesses. We start by looking at the PESTLE factors and what they include, we then look at Porter’s five forces before reading a case study on Morrison’s and the top four supermarkets in the UK. A 10 mark question with structure guidance and a concise model answer is included for students to look at and improve their own answers after peer assessments. To consolidate the PESTLE factors we read a concise fact file on the housing market, students use this information and their own research to find out more about the housing market, and then feedback the PESTLE factors they think are impacting on the housing market.
